The Industry Training Federation (ITF) is today honouring the outstanding contribution of departing Hairdressing Industry Training Organisation (HITO) Chief Executive Erica Cumming, following 19 years at HITO, 13 as its Chief Executive.
“Erica has been an outstanding leader and powerful advocate for the hairdressing, barbering and beauty industries,” says ITF Chief Executive Josh Williams. “Erica paved the way for modern apprenticeships in her industry, and the development of internationally recognised qualifications for the hair and beauty sectors. She has led the organisation through major government reviews and policy changes, and through her tireless work, has helped to develop the outstanding reputation of New Zealand's hair, barbering and beauty industries, nationally and globally.”
Growing up in Southland, Erica completed her Hairdressing Apprenticeship at 15, followed by her Trade and Advanced Trade Certificates, becoming a hairdressing business owner at 19. Erica went on to become an examiner, an industry assessor and moderator before becoming HITO’s National Moderator, and then Chief Executive for the past 13 years.
“Throughout her leadership, and as a member of the ITF, Erica has lived her passion for apprenticeship training and for seeing more people gaining skills and qualifications,” says Mr Williams. “One of the key strengths of the industry training and apprenticeship sector is that so many who get their start as apprentices are then driven to pay it forward and give back to their industries through supporting the next generation of skills and talent. Erica's own industry training journey has contributed to her passion for making a difference, the relationships she forms, and the huge affection and respect she has gained from people at all levels in her vibrant industries.”
“Industry training and apprenticeships capture talent and transform lives,” says Mr Williams. "Erica has given back to her industry and then some. We will miss her very much from our Federation, and we wish her all the very best".
